Student life added to Dutch cultural heritage list
The Dutch have added student traditions and associations to their official immaterial cultural heritage list. According to the National Chamber of Associations (LKvV), the Dutch student life is “a lively, dynamic culture that contributes to social cohesion”.
Inclusion on the list means that the culture surrounding Dutch student life is officially recognized as an important tradition. From now on, international students who join a student association, participate in hazing rituals and spend their evenings going “borrelen” with other students can undeniably say they are sniffing up culture.
To finish off with an interesting detail: earlier this year, the typically Dutch “worstenbroodje”, a sausage roll, was added to the list.
