Jazlyn van den Broek, SAM: ‘Students should be able to attend lectures at home’
A central walk-in point for students with mental or study problems. More recorded lectures so that students who cannot come to campus can still keep up. These are two points that Jazlyn van den Broek, SAM’s party leader, makes a case for. ‘SAM wants to be there for everyone.’

What should be different about Tilburg University?
‘The university should become more accessible, for example, through more recorded lectures that are renewed every year. So that students can also attend their lectures at home.
‘We also want more facilities for mental health. The student psychologists and deans of students are now poorly visible. There should be a central walk-in point where people can go with problems with their studies or with their mental health.
The party leaders
It’s almost election time on campus again. From faculty council and division committee to university council: from April 16 to 18, students and employees will choose who will represent their interests in the participation councils of Tilburg University.
In the run-up to the election week, Univers publishes interviews with the party leaders of the participation parties. Who are they and what do they stand for? And how will the parties help the university and its students and employees move forward?
‘Campus life can also become more attractive, livelier, so that students come to campus more often. Not only for lectures but also to study together or to meet up with friends. There used to be a Campus Café, but it wasn’t open much, and there should be more living rooms, like in Montesquieu Building.
‘The facilities could also be improved, more outlets in lecture halls so you can charge your laptop and phone, and more comfortable study places.’
What is going well?
‘The initiatives in Cube, such as study materials in vending machines. Participating in the MindLabs project, where several organizations like Fontys and the ROC come together to solve social problems, and where students also receive education. And team teaching, which you see in my study program, Liberal Arts and Sciences, where you are taught by two lecturers from two different perspectives.’
What will Party SAM be working on in the coming period?
‘We are going to make a strong commitment to the blended learning principle. It is important that everyone can participate in education. So that people who are sick or cannot come to campus because of their mental conditions or disabilities can still attend lectures. We want education to be and remain accessible.
‘You should be able to attend lectures even if you are ill’
‘Vending machines for study materials, drop-off points for cans and bottles, there are lots of facilities that are now only available in Cube, we want to expand them to other buildings. The quality of the food in the Mensa has to improve, and we want chocolate milk back in the vending machines.’
What have you accomplished for students so far?
‘The menstrual cabinets in Cube are a SAM initiative. Last month we had Well-being Awareness Week, which we organized in collaboration with TiGeAk. Furthermore, we achieved that you can now submit your thesis digitally, previously it was still on paper.
‘Also, there is now an international booklet, with tips for international students. For this, we have collaborated with Complex and Flow. And we have the collaboration with Student Housing in Tilburg, which is really successful. This allows people to open their homes to students without housing. That has happened quite a lot already.’
Why should students vote for Party SAM?
‘SAM is really committed to all students. Whether you come to campus every day or less frequently. Whether you are a Dutch student or an international one, SAM wants to be there for everyone. We have fun and capable people. The candidates who are on the list with me care about the university and the students and want to work for that, which is why we want a seat on the University Council.’
Who is Jazlyn van den Broek?
