Probeert Stapel anoniem zijn naam te zuiveren?
Diederik Stapel wil graag een tweede kans, zoveel was al duidelijk. Hij grijpt iedere gelegenheid aan om zijn kant van het verhaal te kunnen vertellen. Nu beweren de beheerders van de blog Retraction Watch dat Stapel onder het pseudoniem ‘Paul’ reageert op berichten over zijn eigen fraude, om zo zijn naam te zuiveren.
Het regent nieuws rondom Stapel, de professor die drie jaar geleden werd betrapt op grootschalige fraude. Vorige week werd op het laatste moment zijn theatervoorstelling van het programma van het Discovery Festival gehaald, na een bezwaar van de Koninklijke Nederlandse Akademie van Wetenschappen (KNAW), die deels het festival sponsorde. Daarnaast kwam vorige week in het nieuws dat hij is aangenomen als docent sociale psychologie bij Fontys Academy for Creative Industries. Dit is ook in het buitenland niet onopgemerkt gebleven.
Retraction Watch plaatste een bericht onder de veelzeggende titel ‘Curtain up on second act for Dutch fraudster Stapel: College teacher’. Het bericht zelf is niet zo interessant, de discussie tussen reageerders des te meer. Zo schrijft ‘JATdS’: “The school’s education system has become derailed by thinking that paying known science fraudsters is actually a good thing for educating our youth”. Er zijn echter ook reaguurders die het voor Stapel opnemen. Zoals ‘Paul’, die schrijft:
“Help! Let’s not change anything. Science is a flawless institution. Yes. And only the past two days I read about medical scientists who tampered with data to please the firm that sponsored their work and about the start of a new investigation into the work of a psychologist who produced data “too good to be true.” […] I think it is time for the “Men in Black” to move in to start an outside-invesigation of science and academia. The Stapel case and other, similar cases teach us that scientists themselves are able to clean-up their act.”
Zo zijn er meerdere voorbeelden van mensen die Stapel een warm hart toedragen. ‘Nothingifnotcritical’ schrijft: “Stapel possesses an interesting (to say the least) combination of expertise, experience, and demise. The fact that he did not work honestly for a long time (but confessed, was punished and came clean: see e.g. book) makes him an extra interesting person to teach a course on social philosophy (I do not think that he will only teach about his fraud, — for forty college weeks?).”
De beheerders van Retraction Watch lijken anders over deze reacties te denken. Onder zowel de reactie van ‘Paul’ als die van ‘Nothingifnotcritical’ is het volgende bericht te lezen:
“Note from Retraction Watch: We’ve had reason to believe that this and several other messages being left by “Paul” were actually posted by Diederik Stapel. Because “Paul” refers to Stapel in the third person, the comments may include a misrepresentation, violating our comment guidelines. We’ve e-mailed the person who left those messages, and he or she refused to say whether Stapel is leaving the messages. We therefore wanted to post a notice alerting readers to our concerns.”
Redacteur Ivan Oransky schrijft in een e-mail dat de mensen achter Retraction Watch om privacyredenen niet kunnen zeggen waarom ze denken dat Stapel de reacties heeft geschreven. Stapel op zijn beurt ontkent dat hij zich uitlaat onder de naam ‘Paul’ en vindt de reactie van de site overtrokken.
UPDATE: Inmiddels heeft Stapel toegegeven dat hij inderdaad onder het pseudoniem Paul schreef.
