More English at TiU

Communication at Tilburg University will be more and more in English. The university wants the label ‘international’ during the next institutional audit.

“This means we are going to switch integrally to the English language in our communication”, the Executive board writes in a letter about the concept strategic plan to the university council.

In November 2011 the assessment frameworks for the (quality) feature have been determined. The university of Wageningen was the first to get the distinctive quality feature internationalization in 2012 after eight years of preparation. Over there, administrative  documents are available in English as much as possible. The university council has its meetings in English and all master programs are in the English language. The website and the internal website are both in Dutch and English. All facilities aim at international students, which means every one should be able to speak the language at Wageningen.

The next institutional audit in Tilburg is in six years. “To get the quality feature internationalization, international students, PhDs and lectures should be able to ‘ survive’ at our organization on their own: in education, facilities and co-determination etc. This does not mean that the Dutch language should be banned. This will depend on the situation. For example, Dutch law will not be taught in English,” explains executive board member Philip Eijlander.
