Increase of ‘foreign’ students in drawing-lots courses
Nearly seventeen percent of freshman in 2010 who started a higher education study program that selects students by drawing lots has a non-Dutch background. In 2006 this was over six percent, figures from Dienst Uitvoering Onderwijs (DUO) show.
In recent years there were more applicants than places for study programs such as medicine and dentistry. Students in these popular study programs, so called lotingsstudies, are often selected by drawing lots.
A DUO spokesman emphasized that students with a non-Dutch nationality include both international students and students who were born in The Netherlands but are not registered as Dutch nationals.
