A day in my life
I wake up to the sound of raindrops, my roommate’s alarm clock. “Morning,” she mumbles half asleep. After some awkward moments in the beginning of our history as room buddies, by now I got used to her face being the first and the last thing I see during a day in Hong Kong. “Morning,” I reply, and enter our common room.
A much more cheerful “hellooooooooo” awaits me: it is our cleaning lady, who pretty much lives on our floor and prepares her breakfast. Her happiness definitely improves early mornings. After spending some hours in classes and on assignments (which take much more time than I expected and would like to admit), I take the metro downtown. In ‘Sneaker Street’ I, quite obviously, rummage through millions of shoe shops. On the ‘Goldfish market’, plastic bags full of potential luck-bringing pets await me. ‘Lady’s market’ offers bargains beyond imagination.
Exhausted from all the walking, I grant myself some BBQ snacks and dim sums (different small steamed dishes served in a basket) that are sold everywhere around town. Having a lucky day, I accidentally pass one of the million skyscrapers, seeing some hipsters enter. Coffee? Coffee. On the 4th floor of a completely innocent looking building I find myself in an amazingly decorated room full of books, cats and delicious cakes. “Why am I constantly involved in food activities,” a small voice inside my head asks. I decide to ignore this voice and continue enjoying my tofu cheesecake.
Already leaving the coffee shop more rolling than walking, some friends persuade me to go to our local fruit market/mall/bar. The main reason: getting a waffle from the waffle lady (or depending on day and mood, an ice cream from the ice cream lady next door). A piece of dough covered with butter, peanut butter, condensed milk and sugar sounds like a perversion of food? It may be, but also one of the most delicious ones I’ve ever had! Exhausted from all the calories, I fall into my bed. “Wanna go to the gym?” my roommate asks. Definitely not. And so, we spend the rest of the evening chilling and reading in bed until it is time for a mumbled “night”.
