Soft summer start for 3,700 Participants at TOP Week 2024
It’s busy at the Sports Center on Monday morning. Thousands of new students are registering for the unofficial start of the academic year: TOP Week. Inside, they are dutifully signing up and receiving their information bags. Outside, on the hockey field, they are sometimes still awkwardly searching for their mentor group.
The weather is soft and summery. Ideal for an introduction week where new students get acquainted with the university, associations, the city, and student life. Just like last year, around 3,700 students are participating in the introduction week.
About 350 mentors are guiding them during the introduction week. Additionally, there are about 40 volunteers assisting with the various activities. ‘The TOP Crew,’ says TOP Chairman Marc Jacobs. ‘They are all deployed now, it’s extremely busy this morning.’
More Participants Under 18
Regarding registrations, there isn’t much difference from previous years. About the same number of students are participating in the introduction week, and the number of internationals has also remained roughly the same. However, there are relatively more participants under 18 than before.
‘That’s probably because we now have a few more university of applied sciences participants,’ Jacobs explains, ‘the Purple introduction week of Fontys is a week after ours this year.’
The Festival
TOP Chairman Jacobs is most looking forward to the TOP Festival on Thursday afternoon in the Spoorzone. ‘That has to do with the new location. It used to be in the Muzentuin, but we can’t use that space this year due to renovation work. Now we are at Locomotiefboulevard behind the Koepelhal and Wagenmakerij.’
And more has changed than just the location, Jacobs says. ‘We have new partners, there will be a second stage with all kinds of different music styles. That’s where it all comes together, and that’s really the big innovation for us. It’s something where we, as the new TOP board, could leave our mark.’
