Protest against cuts to higher education, says Vice President de Koning
‘We were furious, and we’re even angrier now.’ Vice President Wilma de Koning is strongly critical of the proposed cuts to higher education. She is now calling on students and staff to join the demonstration in Utrecht on November 14.
The upcoming protest against cuts to higher education is set for Thursday, November 14, at 1 p.m. in Moreelse Park, Utrecht. Hundreds of demonstrators are expected to gather, including Wilma de Koning. The Tilburg University Vice President believes the minister needs to ‘keep thinking and listening’—something she feels is currently not happening.
In a message to all students and staff on the Tilburg University website, De Koning highlights that ‘warning voices are coming from all corners of society’ urging against cuts to higher education. Yet, the government appears to be ignoring these concerns.
Earlier this year, Rector Magnificus Wim van den Donk expressed his anger at the cuts, stating he was ‘furious,’ a sentiment that De Koning echoes, saying they are ‘even more furious now.’ This frustration is further fueled by the announcement during the fall break that the Minister plans to cut millions more from research funding at NWO (Dutch Research Council).
For De Koning, this is the last straw. She hopes to see many people at the protest on November 14.
Protest March
The nationwide protest against the higher education cuts is being organized by groups such as WOinActie, AOb, FNV, CNV, LSVB, and ISO. The cuts have sparked anger and distress among both students and staff, but the organizers promise an inspiring day. The march will begin in Moreelse Park and end at Domplein, with speeches and live music.
