Cleaners surprised: urinal in university library destroyed
It was an unusual morning for the cleaners at Tilburg University. One of the urinals in the library lay completely shattered on the floor. ‘I’ve never seen anything like this.’

Cleaners at Tilburg University were met with a surprise on the morning of Wednesday, October 1, when they entered the restrooms of the university library. In the men’s restroom on the ground floor of the library, just below the entrance level, one of the urinals lay in pieces across the tiled floor.
‘It was an unusual morning. We found the urinal in hundreds of fragments,’ says Peter Eindhoven, one of Tilburg University’s cleaning staff. Jack Sandkuijl from Facility Services was equally astonished: ‘In the four years I’ve worked here, I’ve never seen anything like this.’
Ripped from the wall
Whether it was an accident or an act of vandalism remains unclear, though Sandkuijl suspects the latter. ‘A toilet fixture doesn’t just break, certainly not into so many small pieces,’ he explains.
But the university will not be looking for the culprit. ‘Investigating who did it would take an enormous amount of time and effort. Chances are slim that we would find the person responsible. That’s unfortunate. We have, however, placed an order for a new urinal.’
The shards have already been cleaned up. Once the replacement urinal has been delivered, Facility Services will install it. Until then, the restroom remains accessible to students, with the other urinals and toilets still available for use.
