Foreign students more careful with their bikes

Foreign students at the university have their bikes stolen less often than Dutch students. Crime economist Ben Vollaard publishes his findings in the ESB journal.

Foreign students take the warnings about high number of bicycle thefts in the Netherlands seriously. That’s why they are more careful with their bikes. Dutch students are less impressed by the number of bicycle thefts and they rely more on their own experience.

60 percent of the foreign students usually lock their bikes to a tree or a street lamp. And that makes a difference: the risk of bicycle theft is 15 percent lower among foreign students in comparison to the Dutch students.

The study is based on a survey conducted among 155 undergraduate Economics students at Tilburg University. Out of all students with a bicycle, almost a third came from abroad.
