Student housing costs up in Tilburg

In Tilburg the cost of student accommodation has increased most compared to the rest of the Netherlands. The average rent has risen by 9 percent from 283 euros in the first quarter of 2010 to 308 euros in the first quarter of 2011.

Nevertheless the average price is still 53 euro below the national rent average of 361 euros a month, quarterly figures published by student room website Kamernet.nl show.

In comparison with the same period in 2010 the average available student accommodation went down 16 percent. The available student accommodation in Tilburg (-26 percent), Den Bosch (-31 percent) and Eindhoven (-21 percent) decreased more than the national average.

“For many students the first quarter of 2011 was a very troubled period due to the government decisions regarding study grants. This may be the cause for less available student accommodation”, Angela Stokes of Kamernet.nl said.  “Many students were probably too busy with making study choices and finishing their studies, instead of making a student accommodation change.” [MW/transl.
