A caught home-grower of hemp is a male about 40 years old. Most home growers have a paid job and are often home owners.
This has been shown in a research on home growers, performed by the IVA Beleidsonderzoek en Advies (Policy-research and Advice) connected to the TiU. The main questions were: what is the social profile of the home grower and what are the reasons for growing cannabis.
The home grower usually decides to start growing cannabis as a result of financial need and/or he refuses to adapt to a lower income. The commercial home grower works semi-independently. The growing equipment is purchased at a grow shop which can offter help in installing a fully functioning plantation. Research has not shown any evidence of violence or coercion against the home grower. The organized crime which plays an important role in the background does cause a violence problem.
