Retired UvA Professor guilty of plagiarism

Kristoffel Lieten, a retired professor at the UvA, has been convicted of plagiarism. He gets a fine of €7.700. Lieten plagiarized a paper from Ajai Sahni, an executive director of the Institute for Conflict Management in New Delhi.

Sahni was approached in 2000 to investigate conflicts in Northeast India. He published the results in the journal Faultlines: Writings on Conflict & Resolution. Two years later an article appeared in the book by Lieten Searching for Peace in South and Central Asia. Sahni noticed the article after some time and went to court. He won the case. The verdict is: “Professor Lieten’s paper is the verbatim reproduction of the survey published by the plaintiff (Dr. Sahni) with only some cosmetic changes.”

Lieten was given a fine of 500.000 Indian rupees, which is about €7.700, and has to cover the costs of the lawsuit. In addition, he must give the research material and the printed copies of his article to Sahni so that they can be destroyed. The UvA examines the case. Lieten denies that he committed plagiarism and is confident about the results of the UvA investigation, reports Folia Web.
