Europe critical of Dutch cuts in education

The European Union is critical about the budget cuts in higher education that the Netherlands recently introduced. Europe warns the Netherlands that reckless cuts are not the solution.

Science Guide reports, that both EU President Jose Manuel Barroso and the European Council President Van Rompuy recommend that the education should not be a victim of the urge for savings that the Dutch government currently shows. Instead, they suggest that “ spending in areas that are of direct relevance to growth such as research and innovation, education and training should be spared.”

The development of the Netherlands will not benefit from the too severe cuts, concludes Barroso. Education is a key to stimulating economic growth. Netherlands would have to be innovative in this area.

Germany is a country in the European Union that sees investment in education as a way of combating unemployment. This approach seems to be much more effective.
