Students borrow increasingly more money

The students increasingly burden themselves with study debt. Five years ago an average student would borrow €10.000 per year. Now he loans €14.000 per year.

The loans also go to the extreme. Some students seem to lead a very expensive student life and borrow more than €100.000 a year. Nu.nl reports that in 2006 there were four students with such an excessive debt, and in 2010, twenty one students joined the rich club.

You have to remember that what helps now, can have ugly consequences in the future. The National Union of Students (LSVb) is worried about the debt burden. “A high student loan can cause problems in the future, such as when a student wants to get a mortgage,” says the LSVb spokesman. Will the students be able to dig themselves out of the debt on time? DUO thinks that they will, because the repayment schedule is flexible enough.

The increase in student loan doesn’t necessarily have to do with them needing more money for beer and entertainment. LSVb points out that students are now under pressure of a long study fine and higher tuition fee for a second study. “And when the scholarship for graduate students is cancelled, that amount will only increase.”
