Roos Hogekamp wins FemFactor-award

Today the first FemFactor-award 2012 has been awarded to Roos Hogenkamp of the international office. Roos received the award for her exemplary role as a talented young manager. The FemFactor-award for the science staff will be awarded at a different time.

“Roos expertly manages a young and flexible team. She is very humane; she grants others opportunities, but also knows when to make decisions. She is still young herself, but she has already accomplished much while working at the University of Tilburg. She stimulates people in her environment and constantly seeks new challenges for herself.” Thus states the nomination by her co-workers. The jury confirms this and adds that she is cheerful and ambitious: a true example for younger women.

FemFactor is a network which seeks to improve the female factor in the university. FemFactor consists of different dinner groups who frequently meet in the Esplanade. During these dinners people can nominate candidates for the award. The award is granted to people who reveal feminine talent. It’s a light way and cheery way to raise the percentage of female excellence in top functions at the University of Tilburg.

The university does achieve targets set by the government for the percentage of women in the higher echelons of science and management at universities, but those targets are quite low. The monitoring report ‘Talent naar de Top’ lists these percentages: for scientific staff the target is at 12,86 %. Tilburg university achieves 12,9 %. This seems like a high percentage, but still only one-eighth of the top scientific staff is female. The percentages for the top of the supporting staff are a bit better: almost two out of five of the top functions in this department are held by females.

“The ambition is of course a 50/50 division”, said the chairman of the university’s executive board, Hein van Oorschot, during the university council on March 30th. “The targets will be much harder to achieve in the future. The number of professors is being reduced by the budget cuts. This means that in some cases talent can’t move on.”
