From June 1: Google Apps @ TIU for everyone

Today the President of the Executive Board Hein van Oorschot signed the final contract with Google. Van Oorschot: “Although the University of Amsterdam department has already signed it, Tilburg University is the first to do it for the entire academic community.” But what will change for the students? Univers interviewed Rebecca Scholte, the project leader.

From June 25, e-mails will not be delivered to the old mailbox, but to Google environment. Scholte, “The old mailbox remains working until late September. Then all the information contained therein will be removed. Also, “students who are eager to use the new Google environment can start right away: from June 1 it is already possible to have your university mail transferred to the university Google mailbox.

Scholte tells students what to expect: “From 1 June, Google Apps @ Tilburg University will be available as a new standard service to all students and staff. With this service the university offers a new, modern mailbox. Student mailbox will be significantly improved: the current mailbox is “only” 100 megabytes in size. The Google mailbox is 25 Gigabyte (GB), so over 250 times bigger. In addition, the university makes a Google Drive tool available, a brand new Google product. Scholte: “Now students are able to activate Google Drive. They receive 5 GB of storage for files. They can synchronize this storage with their PC or their smartphone. “It does not matter where you are, all files on all your devices will be identical.

The contract applies to all Dutch institutions of higher education. Scholte: “Important elements of this contract are that there will be no advertising and that Google doesn’t use and resell user data.”
