New copy system on campus
The university replaces all the old Océ copy machines and printers with new, Canon machines. The project started in February and should be finalized in the summer. The old copy cards that still have some unused credit cannot be used in the new machines.
According to Peter Smits, the Head of Facility Services, the old copy machines and printers are being replaced because they often break, and the contract with Océ has expired. The new system has several advantages. TiU students and staff can now print in color and scan the documents. Smits: “The old system also sent your print command to the hard disk of the printer installed close to your workplace. The new machines send the command in the cloud. So you can print it at any given machine after you log-in. Previously, the print jobs would also arrive in a queue, so confidentiality was not guaranteed. Now you can see only your own documents. This would hopefully result in us saying goodbye to all desktop printers. That makes working conditions healthier and is much cheaper. It also allows you to work with more confidence.”
In the old system the users could only print after a pin card was put in the machine. These cards will no longer be used. Printing and copying is now possible with the UvT card. “It only identifies the user. You print or copy what you need and the amount is charged to the department. “That can be difficult for employees (mostly students) who combine multiple jobs and thus work in two different places at the university. ”We have still no solution to this problem. It is not a technical problem but an organizational issue. ”
For students, the system changes from the new academic year. They must now identify with their student or public transport card. They can then print or copy and pay with their chip. The advantage of the identification system is also that confidentiality of your documents is guaranteed.
