Students want a new vote on long study fine
Parties in the House of Representatives must vote again on the long study fine. This is necessary since the CDA party leader Van Haersma Buma said he wants to get rid of the fine. At least, that’s what student and youth organizations ISO and LSVb believe. The VVD had already made clear that the fine can’t be immediately abolished, because this may increase a budget deficit.
The student unions and youth organizations consider it important that the House of Representatives makes decisions and would therefore reciver from recess. The political youth organizations from D66, GroenLinks, PvdA and VVD, with CNV Jong and FNV Jong and student organization ISO criticized the fact that students resuming their studies in September are faced with uncertainty. ISO chairman Thijs van Reekum: “It can be that students who happen to be in the 2012-2013 academic year have to pay the fine, while students who will start next year will not be faced with a long study fine. The students should not become victims of an uncertain political climate.”
VD leader Klaas Dijkhoff said on Tuesday night in the television program Nieuwsuur that his party would not immediately get rid of the fine, because it would make the budget deficit worse.
