Students and parents worry about student loans
A majority of students and parents oppose the plan of the government to abolish the basic study grant. This is shown in the survey conducted by the studerenmoetkunnen.nl of FNV Jong and the National Union of Students (LSVb).
The survey shows that the replacement of basic study grant with the loan system will result in fewer students going to college. Those who still want to study will probably have less time to devote to the studies under financial pressure.
Also the parents are concerned with the proposal of the government. Nine out of ten parents are worried about their child’s future student debt. Two thirds of parents fear that a student loan will play a role in their child’s choice whether he/she is going to follow higher education. Over a quarter of parents believe that their child may drop their studies if the basic grant is converted into a loan.
