Tilburg University dropped on list of handicap friendly universities

Tilburg University drops on the list of handicap friendly universities. This is the outcome of a report by Centrum Hoger Onderwijs Informatie (Center Higher Education Information). The report contains a summary of the most important results from the user survey ‘Studying with a handicap’. For this survey, students with a disability were questioned. The research was done in the context of the National Student Survey.

Last year, Tilburg University was 4th on the list of 14 schools. This year, Tilburg drops significantly to the 14th place on a list of 16 schools. A total amount of 213 mentally and physically disabled students were questioned about Tilburg University. De disabilities of the students ranged from dyslexia or autism to a paraplegia or asthma. In 2011 the university got a total score of 6.54. This year that score was a little lower, namely 6.3. They left points on the table for teacher understanding and tools.

The Open University Netherlands was first with a total score of 7.48. This was the first year this university participated. Second was Wageningen University and third the Technical University Eindhoven. The least handicap friendly university was the Protestant Theological University. They got a total score of 5.66.

Higher education institutions were also examined. Overall, university ratings were a little higher than the higher education institutions. The survey was done among 17,022 fulltime students, of which 12,490 were from the higher education institutions, 3,339 participated in a university bachelor and 1,180 did a university master.
