BD: Multimillion Deficit Faculty of Economics

Tilburg University’s Faculty of Economics’ budget hasn’t balanced since 2010, reports the Brabants Dagblad based on statements by anonymous sources. The paper reports a deficit varying from 2.5 to 4 Million Euros which is caused by out of control personnel expenses, the costs of internationalizing and the costs of the website Me Judice.

In his reaction to the Brabants Dagblad, Chairman of the Board Koen Becking states that he won’t deny or confirm any reports on the Faculty of Economics’ deficit. “I have no desire to elaborate on any faculty’s annual accounts with the newspaper. Generally speaking, I would like to say that there are good times and bad times. This specter isn’t a proper reflection.”

Univers also had a look at the concept budget for 2013 which was discussed by the University Council in December of 2012. It would appear that the Faculty of Economics had a deficit of 3 Million Euros in 2011. For 2012, the deficit was estimated at 1.1 Million Euros. In 2013, TiSEM would again plunge into the red figures by 738,000 Euros, according to the budget.

The budget also shows that personnel costs are by far the highest costs at the Faculty of Economics (35 Million). In comparison, at FSW the personnel costs amount to an estimated 23 Million, at Law School to 18 Million, at Humanities to 16 Million and at Theology to 4 Million. However, this doesn’t take into account that the faculties vary in size. Approximately 400 people work at TiSEM. The average costs per employee roughly amounts to 83,000 Euros. In comparison, at TSB the average employee earns about 64,000 Euros and for the theologians this figure is roughly 80,000 Euros.

Overall, Tilburg University’s general budget for 2012 amounts to a 3.7 Million Euro deficit. In 2011, this figure was still -12.4 Million. In 2013, the deficit is expected to amount to 2.2 Million.
