IT Newsflash

Student PCs have already upgraded to Windows 7, but starting May first the Library and IT department will upgrade employee’s PCs to Windows 7 and introduce Office 2010. The department hopes to realize a mixed IT-environment where workers choose their own equipment and work space.

Windows 7 has been available to students for some time now, but it has been causing problems. Corno Vromans, deptuty director of the Library and IT department (LIS), spoke of a ‘haunted’ process that has endured many setbacks: including the recent problems with printing. According to LIS, the printing problems, caused by the payment system, should be solved by now.

Besides a new operating system and office suite, employees can expect a new phone system. Tilburg University will adopt a system called MSLync: you can log in to your account from every phone, optimizing transfers to mobile phones and enabling live communication via Exchange. All these changes hope to further increase the flexibility of working space at Tilburg University.

Lastly: there is a new supplier for desktop computers, laptops and display screens. A company called SCC from Bodegraven. They won the contract bid from Tilburg University.
