Two Vidar rowers at World Cup under 23
Two Vidar rowers will compete in the World Cup for rowers under the age of 23. Wouter Borghs (21, student TiSEM) and Wouter Withagen (21, student TSB) are both selected. Their participation means that they have a good chance to be selected for the Holland Eight later on.
Borghs: “We are selected for what you can see as the Young Dutch team. Every year rowers who compete for this team, will eventually compete in the (normal) Dutch team. That is our goal, we look at this as a leg up to to the Dutch team.”
The two rowers entered the selection week of the Royal Dutch Rowing Federation (KNRB). “The KNRB has several moments on which they scout. At Vidar Wouter and me are the strongest. The KNRB looked at our performances at the National Championships and our physical strength.”
Borghs and Withagen will be coached by Joeri Bruschinski and Irmo Vreeburg. “We will train eleven or twelve times a week, which is about thirty hours. On Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesday, I train at Delft and Wouter Wilthagen trains at Amsterdam. On those days we train in Fours because it was too hard to train together all the time, because of our schedules. On Thursdays until Sundays we do train in Eights. On the 28th of July the final will take place in Austria. After that, the team splits up and we will train at Vidar again.”
