Discussion night on kidney donation

People that need a new kidney, end up on a long waiting list. Tonight, professor health economy Peter Kooreman and Henk Smid, director of ZonMw, will discuss this problem and the possible solutions. Smid donated a kidney to an anonymous patient.

Kooreman and Smid think the most fertile solution for the shortage is living donation. Smid knows from experience that it is perfectly fine to live with just one kidney. Prior to the discussion, there will be a show of the documentary Tales from the Organ Trade. This film shows the problems with organ trade in, among others, Canada, the Philippines and the United States. Poor people in developing countries sometimes sell an organ to western traders, as a way to escape poverty.

The initiative for the night came from three students in health economy and four Outreaching students. Academic Forum is partner in the organisation.

The event is freely accessible for everybody who is interested and will be in English. 18.45, Black Box, Esplanade building.
