Google stops scanning students’ e-mail
Google won’t use anymore information from students’ e-mail accounts for advertisement. The company used to do so, in their own words to improve the ‘educational experience’ and protect students.
The educational accounts that Google manages were scanned for information, so Google could personalize advertisements on other websites. This is not going to happen anymore, Google claims. The App for Education-service also will not contain any advertisements in the future. Before, administrators could enable the app to show advertisement, this option expires.
Corno Vromans from the department Library & IT Services at TiU says: “I applaud every development that helps guarantee privacy. The contract negotiations with Google have been conducted by all joining universities together and have resulted in a contract that meets the standards of the protection of personal data. We need this collaboration in the future to be able to influence big suppliers like Google”.
