Problems with Muslim veils on French universities
Some professors at French universities cause problems with students who wear hijabs, the traditional Muslim headscarf. Since recent attacks in France, the debate about religious symbols in public places has resurfaced.
France24 writes that politicians and public are struggling to combine the French secularism with religious tolerance. A professor at the Paris XIII University stated that he was not supportive of religious symbols in public places, when a girl in his lecture was wearing a hijab. Another professor, at the Sorbonne, asked a student whether she was going to continue wearing ’that thing’ in class.
The first professor was demoted for his comments, the president of the Sorbonne apologized for the second professor’s remark. Recently, Univers published a story about Muslims at Tilburg University, I am not IS (p.21). Muslim students in Tilburg notice the negative effects of terrorism on their daily life too. Student Bilal told us: “This is a process of years with highlights around Geert Wilders. The Dutch climate of Islamophobia is reinforced by groups such as IS.”
