University confirms new Rector Emile Aarts

The new rector of Tilburg University will be professor doctor Emile Aarts from Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e). His nomination was expected, but today the university officially confirmed the rumors.Emile Aarts (1955) currently is dean and professor of Mathematics and Computer Science at TU/e. He will succeed the current Rector Philip Eijlander on 1 June 2015. Eijlander will go on sabbatical and return as professor at Tilburg Law School.

Aarts worked at Philips Research from 1983 until 2012. He filled several research and management positions. In 1991, he became part time professor Computing Science at TU/e and in 2007 full time professor Industrial Design. In 2012 he left Philips to focus on a career in science. He soon took the position of dean of Mathematics and Computer Science and founded the Intelligent Lighting Institute. His research interests are Social Innovation Technologies and Open Innovation. Social Innovation is an important priority in Tilburg University’s strategic plan.

Tilburg University cooperates with TU/e on the foundation of a data science study and a Graduate School in Den Bosch. Choosing a new rector from Eindhoven is a logical step for our university.
