Tilburg-West under construction: what will change for the university?

More green spaces, more housing and businesses, and a better train station. Tilburg-West, the district surrounding the university, will undergo a major transformation over the next twenty years.

Tilburg should become a true university city, rather than just ‘a city with a university,’ says the municipality of Tilburg in the ‘Ontwerp Omgevingsprogramma Kenniskwartier.’ Over the next twenty years, the municipality plans to invest millions in developing the knowledge quarter, the area between the Spoorpark and the university. New housing, businesses, and green spaces will be added, and the train station will be completely overhauled.

New station

And that is much needed, according to the municipality. The station’s platforms are far apart, separated by staircases and the Statenlaan. Travelers have little oversight and often take too long to catch their train or reach the university. Additionally, the municipality states that the station has unreliable services and ‘subpar quality of stay, which leads to nuisance and a sense of insecurity.’

A station renewal is therefore high on the wish list. There will be a station square with a main hall, wider platforms, and underground pedestrian connections. The platforms will be repositioned across from each other on the west side of the Statenlaan, making the entire station more accessible from the university.

Sports center

The university’s sports center will also be revamped. The municipality and the university are currently investigating the feasibility of such a renovation. They are also looking for a suitable location, as the sports center may be relocated.

Student housing is also on the horizon. One of the main goals is to add around 7,500 new homes, including affordable housing for students and recent graduates. Additionally, more space will be allocated for small businesses, startups, and larger offices. More details on the final plans are expected after the summer.
