‘Work from home,’ traffic services warn, but the resits will continue as usual

Rijkswaterstaat, the Dutch Ministry of Infrastructure, expects a very busy morning rush hour on Wednesday and calls on people to work from home. But Tilburg University’s resit exams will continue as usual: ‘Take extra time and prepare your trip well!’

‘We are simply following the existing protocol for winter weather,’ the university responds by means of spokesperson Imre van der Meulen. With the call, Rijkswaterstaat wants to prevent an overloaded morning rush hour on the highways, but most students do not come to campus by car, says Van der Meulen.

For students from outside the city, it can still be difficult to reach the campus. Because weather and traffic services warn of heavy snowfall and strong winds with poor visibility. So the consequences of the winter weather for bus and train traffic are very uncertain.

Prepare well

On Tuesday 6 January, the trains did not run until ten o’clock in the morning. And even then only according to a winter schedule. ‘That was due to an exceptional combination of winter weather and an IT failure,’ Van der Meulen swears: ‘If you have to come to campus on Wednesday, it is best to prepare well and plan extra travel time.’ The university warned about the winter weather on Monday via a message on the student portal and on Instagram.

According to the university, postponing the resits would have consequences for many more students. In the tightly planned academic year,  there is hardly any room to move around. If students in individual cases are really in trouble due to the circumstances, they can report to the examination board of their faculty, according to the existing procedures, according to the spokesperson.
