Queen’s speech: ‘Improve quality of education’

“Good education is fundamental for the competitiveness of our country and gives people the opportunity to develop their talents. It is obvious that future economic growth is closely tied to our ability to continue learning”, Queen Beatrix said this in her Speech from the Throne yesterday.

Beatrix continued: “The government therefore wants to improve the quality of education. Teachers and students at the primary and secondary education level are encouraged to continue to develop skills and perform better.

For that purpose, the government will raise the standard of teacher education programs and students will be assessed according to national standards. The results of schools and teachers have to be transparent, so good teachers can be rewarded. Above all, teachers need to be able to focus on teaching classes within their field of expertise. The government will make a proposal on this issue. ”

“The fees for students in higher education are going up. The money will be invested in higher quality and -intensified educational programs. The government will make arrangements with universities and universities of applied sciences concerning over-concentration in courses, promoting excellence in research and a better integration into the labor market. ”

This year the Speech from the Throne and presentation of the new government budget was purely ceremonial. Due to a security error the 2011 budget plans, including the plans on higher education, already leaked out last Thursday.

The annual Speech from the Throne (Dutch: Troonrede) officially opens the coming parliamentary session.
