SER wants more science students

The Social and Economic Council of the Netherlands (SER) has written in their report “Make it in the Netherlands” that more foreign science students should be attracted. The figures in the report show that most of the 56.000 students who come to study in the Netherlands study in economical or social fields.

The deficit of science students at the labor market should be covered by international students, at least that is the opinion of the SER: ‘The emphasis should be on attracting and retaining foreign students in scientific educational programs’.

The SER recommends the Dutch higher education, companies and the Nuffic to promote the Netherlands actively as a county where one can work. To keep the international students in the Netherlands, no matter their education, companies should tighten the bonds between the students and the Nederlands. The SER claims they have enough information that indicates international students want to stay in the Netherlands, but many students go home anyway because of various reasons, such as a lack of knowledge about the Dutch language.
