Herman Skledar (SAM): ‘The university needs a larger sports center’
A larger sports center, more tennis courts, and the return of coffee in the library: these are the points SAM party leader Herman Skledar advocates for in the run-up to the participation council elections. ‘It is almost impossible to take a tennis lesson.’

What needs to change at Tilburg University?
‘Personally, I think it is very important that the sports center becomes larger. The sports center is too small for the number of students there are now, and you can clearly see that.
‘For example, basketball and volleyball players cannot train enough, and on Monday evenings the gym is incredibly crowded. Due to enormous waiting lines, it is almost impossible to simply take a tennis lesson. A larger sports hall and more tennis courts could already make a big difference.
‘In addition, for a number of years it has no longer been possible to drink coffee in the library, even though most students would like that. Recently, a pilot was conducted in the library where students were once again allowed to drink coffee while studying. So it should be possible again in the short term.’
What is already going well?
‘Apart from the crowds, everything is well organized within the sports center. The gym in particular really stands out. The equipment is in decent condition and everything looks neat.’
What have you achieved for students so far?
‘Last year we made sure that chocolate milk returned to the vending machines. We campaigned for that at the time. Another important point is that we contributed to the university signing the Student Housing Covenant. This covenant consists of agreements between the municipality and Tilburg University about the construction of additional student housing around the university.
Elections on campus
Tilburg University is governed in consultation with students and staff. Who should represent your interests in the divisional committees, faculty councils, and the University Council? From Monday, April 20 to Wednesday, April 22, you can cast your vote during the participation elections.

‘We also conducted a pilot for menstrual kits, in which free menstrual products were made available to students. The initiative is intended to make menstrual products accessible to everyone.’
Why should students vote for you?
‘SAM is the oldest student party, and that brings a certain reliability and stability. In recent years we have achieved many things. So if you are looking for reliability and stability, I would choose SAM.’
How do you stay connected with students?
‘We can be found on our website, Instagram, LinkedIn, and recently also on TikTok. Physically, we are also present in the SAM room in the Esplanade building, between 10:00 and 17:00. Everyone is always welcome there.
‘To stay connected with students, we regularly stand on campus with an ideas box, where people can submit their ideas. We also recently handed out flowers to cheer students up after their exam period.
‘In these ways, we stay in direct contact with students and get the chance to tell them more about SAM. That is how we build trust and name recognition.’
