No more mixed housing in Turkey
Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan of Turkey has already took measures that are unpopular among patrots of secularity. Now he has found himself a new hobbyhorse. Because he believes he has a “duty towards parents”, he wants to separate boys and girls in student housing. According to the prime minister, the neighborhood complains about the mingling of the sexes, and his minister of interior affairs
Students are unhappy, to say the least. A Financial Times-journalist who talked to some of them, noted the following quote from twenty-year-old Emirhan: “He had no right to do this, it is our private live”. Erdogan himself states that it is not interfering in people’s privacy, but that it’s simply necessary to involve, because nobody know’s what is going on in these houses. His interior minister adds that it might even be possible that terrorists try to recruit students, because they live in mixed houses.
Erdogan will have to change the law to actually separate male and female students, because they are above eighteen and have the right to decide how they live for themselves.
