TV coach is fake
Cleaning coaches, parenting coaches and feel-good coaches; you see them in television shows regularly. It is all fake, Tilburg University researcher Alexander Waringa, said in Dutch daily De Limburger.
TV coaches should better call themselves advisors, according to Waringa, who is associated with the Nederlandse orde van Beroepscoaches (Dutch association of professional coaches). “They give people advice on how to organize their lives. In coaching we believe that the client is his own advisor, who can take his own decisions”, he says.
On television you often see a hierarchical relationship between a client and his coach. According to Waringa, this is not correct. “A coach is equal to the client. The coach guides and the client should get a better understanding of his problems and start looking for solutions.” [MvdW/transl. YV]
