Young people most optimistic about economy

Dutch consumers feel almost as positive about their financial situation as three months ago. Economic emotions have stabilized after 2010. Young people under 24 years are even more positive than in 2010.

The economy, however, is not picking up yet, shows TILCOM (Tilburg Outlook Consumer Monitor) research among Dutch consumers.

The relationship between positive and negative feelings about the financial future is expressed in the Ecomotion index (economic emotion barometer). It indicated 35.2 in the first quarter of 2011. In September it was still 33.4 and 31.8 one year ago. Currently 25.0 percent of consumers score negatively on the index, they experience more negative than positive feelings. In the fourth quarter of 2010 this percentage of pessimists was even lower (24.4 percent).

Researcher Jorna Leenheer: “Although economic emotions on average are stabilizing, we see increasing differences between the Dutch people. Especially Dutch people at the age between 45 and 55 feel less positive about their financial future.”

Interesting is that the index has risen sharply, from 48.6 to 54.1, in the age group of 15 to 24 years. This youngest age group is scoring higher – and more and more positive – than all other age groups for five quarters already. Both young people who live with their parents (54.6) as young people living independently (53.5) score high on the Ecomotion index. [MW/transl. YV]
