Spain most popular destination for Dutch exchange students
For the second year in a row Spain is the top choice destination for Dutch exchange students, according to the Internationalization Monitor of Education in the Netherlands 2010. Spain is followed by United Kingdom, Sweden, France, Germany, Norway, Italy, Denmark, and Turkey.
Although France still ranks fourth place, it has become a slightly less popular destination then it used to be. The same goes for Italy. All other countries only gained in popularity. Portugal showed the largest increase in Dutch exchange students (35%, 12th place), Denmark (33%), Ireland (26%, 13th place), and Turkey (24%). The number of Dutch exchange students in Belgium (11th place) decreased slightly.
How Dutch exchange students pay for their study abroad varies. 21 percent of Dutch students go on exchange under the Erasmus and Tempus Program, 34% make use of ‘other programs’, and 45% said to go abroad without any program.
In addition, 37% of the student mobility is paid for by the government, 54% of the students use own funds (or are funded by parents) and 9% find other financial resources. For many students, the lack of money is an important reason not to spend a study period abroad, the researchers say.
