Pursuing master’s degree less attractive without grant
Far less students will pursue a Master’s degree when the basic grant for master’s students is abolished, concludes Dutch student union ISO. The basic study grant will be replaced by a student loan system.
As from next year only bachelor degree students will receive a basic grant, State Secretary of Education Halbe Zijlstra wrote in his policy memorandum. An ISO survey among 2500 students shows that 12 percent of students will not pursue a master’s degree if they have to get a loan. 78 percent of students would also do less extra-curricular activities, such as board activities or having a job.
Master’s students with less well-off parents will still be able to claim the additional grant.
