Tilburg seventh at Sustainable Award ranking

The Tilburg University is on a seventh place on the ranking of the most sustainable university. Tilburg scored 3 out of 24 points. Maastricht University scored 12 points and won the Sustainabul Award 2012.

The prize is awarded every year to the university with the most transparent and sustainable policy. The results are based on an independent review of Rank a Brand en Morgen, in which all 14 Dutch universities have been tested for transparency and sustainability.

The universities have been evaluated in six areas. Management & Policy (Tilburg score 2/3), Education (0/1), CO2 emissions & Energy (8), Environment (0/7), Sustainable Procurement & Fairtrade (0/4) and New Construction & Renovation ( 0/1).

In Management & Policy concerned the question whether the university has a Corporate Social Responsibility policy. This requirement was met by Tilburg University. Also, TiU has a separate pages on its website where news, research and other information on the theme “Sustainability and Society” are posted. The university also has the Tilburg Sustainability Centre.

Because Tilburg does not specify how sustainability is part of higher education, it received no points in the Education category. The same applies to CO2 emissions. The university does not publish their policy to reduce CO2 emissions on the website. However, it buys green power since 2009.

Also in the field of Environment Tilburg deserves no points, according to the researchers. The university doesn’t publish any reports on environmental policy, said the jury. Also data on water consumption over the past year is missing.
