Burden of strikes rests on Greek students
Students of the two biggest universities in Greece are really beginning to feel the effects of the strikes by university’s supporting staff. The University of Athens and the Technical University of Athens are kept locked by the strikers, for the eleventh week in a row. The students are afraid that the situation will cause them to be delayed in their studies.
The two institutions together hold 60.000 students. At the moment, they are not able to enrol in classes or receive their diploma. The Greek government has recently decided to fire or relocate about half of the supporting staff at the universities. A thousand people will be affected by this. Together with teachers and scientists, the staff revolts against this.
At the moment, 25.000 students have signed a petition against the strike and a judge has even declared that the strike is illegal. However, the supporting staff is still blocking the doors of the building and stops teachers and students from getting in.
