TiU wants double degree with Colombian University
Tilburg University is considering the possibility of offering a joint bachelor’s degree in Economics together with the Colombian Universidad Del Rosario (UR). Tilburg students who obtain their bachelor’s degree in Economics at the TiU and who have followed part of the course in Colombia will also obtain a degree from the Colombian University.
However, as yet no agreement on the so-called ‘double degree’ has been signed. Of course, students who don’t want to go to Bogota can follow the regular course. They will obtain a degree from TiU only.
Rector of the UR, Hans-Peter Knudsen, visited the TiU to discuss the possible cooperation, last week. During these talks the current agreement on cooperation between the two universities was updated and prolonged.
Rector Philip Eijlander: “On top of that, we’ve signed an agreement on the joint supervision of PhD students at the Tilburg Law School, particularly in the field of philosophy of law. This means that a professor of each university is involved with supervising the PhD students. We’re starting with it, this year.”
Intervict
Besides this, exploratory talks were held on a possible cooperation with research institute Intervict. The common denominator in these talks is the research into ‘transitional justice’: the question of what justice means in political and legal transitional processes of countries that have been deeply divided by violence and civil war. The focus is on the subjects of citizenship, victims, democracy and the constitutional state.
Antony Pemberton, Director of Studies at Intervict, notes that a cooperation agreement hasn’t been signed yet. “At the moment there I don’t have much more to say than that we’re very much in favor of working closer together with the Rosario University. We’ve explained our research and educational program in more detail and we both agree that further cooperation in the future could be in both our interests. What shape this will actually take, should hopefully become clear in the coming months.”
Tilburg University has been trying to strengthen the ties with Colombia for some time, now. Colombia is the Latin-American country with the most Tilburg alumni. In November 2013, Rector Philip Eijlander opened an alumni chapter there.
