American universities under investigation for abuse claims

The American government investigates the handling of sexual abuse claims at 55 universities and colleges in the country. On the list are all kinds of institutions, from community colleges to Harvard University.

Title XI of the Code of Laws of the United States of America prohibits gender discrimination at schools that receive federal funds. It is striking that the Department of Education releases the list, and quite uncommon. On the department’s website, the Assistant secretary for Civil Rights Catherine E. Lhamon declares: ” We are making this list available in an effort to bring more transparency to our enforcement work and to foster better public awareness of civil right.”

Lhamon emphasizes that the universities on the list have not yet been proven to break the law. The White House has recently promised to give sexual assaults on campus more attention.
