Cheap places to stay in Tilburg

Tilburg may be a student city, you won’t find an abundance of budget hotels in this town of ours. Are you looking for a cheap place to stay and does your list of demands not include roomservice, a doorman and a swimming pool? These are the best places to stay on a student’s budget.

Hostel Roots

Roots opened its doors earlier this year. Housed in a former bank in the heart of the city center, owners Koen Molkenboer and Marion Leijtens have picked the perfect place to realize their dream of opening their own hostel. “So far, it’s been great”, Koen tells us in the basement bar, where guests are served breakfast in the morning, grilled sandwiches during the day and drinks at night – right next to an impressive old vault. “We love the variety of our guests. We have students, backpackers and sports teams stay here, but families too. A couple in their seventies is actually staying with us right now. That’s fantastic.”

The hostel has a capacity of 65 beds. Most of the rooms are shared dorms with bunk beds, but for those who want a little bit more privacy, it’s also possible to check into a private room, a family room, or a luxurious hotel room.

Het Wapen van Tilburg

This budget hotel is run by Guus de Jong, who is there six days a week to welcome guests, dish up food, serve beers, offer friendly chats, arrange bike hires and give directions to disoriented tourists. After spending years working for big hotel chains like Hilton and Marriott, Guus decided to do things differently for his own hotel. Het Wapen van Tilburg does not breathe luxury, but warmth and coziness – or, as the Dutch call it: gezelligheid. “We’re actually more like a hostel than a hotel”, Guus says. “What you see is what you get.”

There’s no front desk, just a bar. All guests have their own key to the building, so they can come and go as they please. The rooms – seven in total – are simple but stylish. The bathrooms and the roof terrace are shared. Located right across from the station, the hotel is a popular short-stay roadhouse for backpackers, business travelers and international students.

De Burgerij

De Burgerij is a charming French-style bed and breakfast, beautifully located in the city’s historic core. It is run by three brothers, Sam, Jaap and Joris van Corven. “We used to live here”, 23-year-old Sam, the youngest, tells us. He points at the large table by the window. “This actually used to be our living room.”

A few years ago, the brothers decided to turn the residence into a restaurant and a bed and breakfast. The food is excellent and the ambiance is wonderfully French. “We currently have six rooms”, Sam says. The rooms are tastefully decorated, and can be booked for both short and longer stays. Unfortunately, the website is only available in Dutch. Internationals may need to get a little bit creative in order to make an online reservation, but this beautiful boutique B&B is definitely worth the trouble.

Loft 013

If you stay at Loft 013, you don’t just get a room – you get an entire apartment. The 45 square-meter loft is furnished in an industrial style and housed in a former textile warehouse. Owner Nill Kolen: “The warehouse dates from 1910. In the past, religious habits were made here. The history of the building is fueled with Catholicism and textile. It doesn’t get more Tilburg than that!”

The loft is suitable for up to six guests. It can be booked for a single night or for a longer period, up to several months or even a year. The loft is equipped with everything you could possibly need, from a fridge to board games. Breakfast is included, and you can cook your own dinner in your private kitchen. And did we mention there’s a dishwasher? The website is not available in English, but reservations can easily be made via email or by giving Nill Kolen a call at +31 (0)6 26 55 61 04.

Single guest: €75 / night – Two guests: €80 / night – Extra bed (up to 6 guests): €50
