Meanwhile on campus: no lockdown for spring

Campus life goes on, even in lockdown. It is springtime and that shows. The campus is dominated by peace and quiet and an abundance of budding life. Photographer Jack Tummers has taken a look and took photos for those who are forced to stay at home.

Life goes on

In the shadow of the young trees in flower no one is kissing or riding. Still, life goes on. New leaves are budding and trees are in bloom. The university looks fresh and green and full of promise.

Campus boulevard

This is usually the site of a relentless flow of students on foot or bike, navigating their way around campus. Now the long tree lined lane between Professor de Moorplein and the carpark is an oasis of calm. The crowds now gather digitally, and this photo of the campus boulevard a visual moment of rest.

Not even a mouse

Not a creature is stirring, not even a mouse. But there is a duck. Happily enjoying the calm on the edge of the pond behind the library.

Room and board

A big house for this great tit, comfortably located between the campus trees. There is ample of room for eggs and young brood. But not for free. The university hopes that the campus tits help with the removal of oak processionary caterpillars. That’s what they like to eat.

Critters welcome

Apart from oak processionary caterpillars, other critters are very welcome on campus. An insect hotel is part of the ecological corridor that the university wants to be between the Warande forest and the city centre. And can it be that we see people on bicycles there? That’s right. The university is not as deserted as it seems. The campus boulevard remains popular as a thoroughfare to and from the Warande forest. There are even people still working there. Security guards who ensure that campus visitors comply with the distance rules and this is of course an ideal period for necessary maintenance.
