Vidar, Plato, Olof, or ESN: which Tilburg student association is the right fit for you?
Sports, new friends, beer, and a nice association life. Sounds great, right? For students still on the fence about joining, Univers asked members from the four largest student associations about their views on inclusivity, traditions, and personal growth. Will it be Vidar, Plato, Olof, or ESN Tilburg that makes your student experience unforgettable?
T.S.R. Vidar
‘Inclusivity, fun, and personal growth are central to the student rowing association Vidar. Everyone gets the chance to participate, whether it’s rowing, training, or choosing between an alcohol-free beer or the traditional kind. The strength of Vidar lies in the combination of sports and parties: training together during the day, including rowing, and toasting together in the evening. During the introduction week, everyone is made to feel at home with tours in both English and Dutch.
‘The association is buzzing with events such as the annual Tilburg Triathlon, the February Congress, and the famous Tilburg University Cantus. Besides these highlights, traditions are important, with members being recognized and appreciated. Numerous social evenings at the association also help in making new friends and strengthening existing friendships.
‘Vidar offers its members plenty of opportunities for personal development through the talent management program. Whether it’s contributing to a committee, forming and coaching your own rowing team, or practicing the rowing sport, the options are varied. At Vidar, sports, socializing, and personal growth come together.’
Nayomi Latulola, President of T.S.R. Vidar
T.S.V. Plato
‘Plato strives for an inclusive environment where all students feel welcome. Diversity is central, and every ‘Platoon’ is respected. Although the main language is Dutch, international students can also join.
‘New members are welcomed immediately upon registration and quickly become involved in the association. The integration period, including the Plato camp, creates connections with other groups within the association. There is no hazing; all members are equal from the start.
‘Throughout the year, Plato organizes various activities, from party nights to professional events. Members can develop by participating in committees, such as the Acquisition Committee, which brings in sponsors. Social committees also help members collaborate and build friendships.
‘The association also contributes to the Tilburg community by organizing activities like the Welfare Week and volunteering for disadvantaged people. Internal criticism is valued and helps the association grow and adapt to the changing needs of students. Member well-being is a priority with trusted contact persons and support protocols.
‘Plato is a dynamic association that listens to its members and maintains traditions, such as the song ‘Nellie the Elephant,’ sung at the bar as long as the members value it.’
Jip Heijmans, External Affairs Officer of T.S.V. Plato
T.S.C. St. Olof
‘T.S.C. Sint Olof strives for an open and welcoming atmosphere where everyone feels at home. The association organizes various activities, such as the Bakboord Festival and open parties, which are accessible to both members and non-members. The program ranges from party nights to awareness activities, such as symposia and the Welfare Week, where themes like student association culture are discussed.
‘New members are welcomed during the TOP week and get the chance to become actively involved through social events and committees. For the Tilburg community, Olof is committed to fundraising for the Kidney Foundation, organizing a homeless dinner, and supporting the Together Laugh Foundation, which helps underprivileged children.
‘Olof continuously improves by appointing trusted persons. Additionally, measures have been taken regarding alcohol use, such as a 0.0 tap and restrictions on strong drinks for first-years.
‘Traditions play an important role within the association. As the oldest association in Tilburg, traditions such as opening the dies week with a holy mass are cherished, with new members actively involved. At the same time, Olof stays up-to-date by conducting annual surveys and organizing members’ meetings, where everyone can voice their opinions.’
Mayumi van Tillo, Ab Actis / Assessor Secundus of T.S.C. St. Olof
ESN Tilburg
‘ESN Tilburg is the student association for international and exchange students in Tilburg, but Dutch students are also warmly welcome. The association focuses on promoting integration and creating a community where students from different cultures meet and have an unforgettable time together. ESN Tilburg offers a wide range of activities, such as language courses, cultural events, party nights, and weekend trips, which not only provide fun but also promote intercultural exchange.
‘What makes the association unique is its international focus. Unlike other associations in the city, the emphasis here is on bringing together students from around the world. This diversity provides an enriching experience, where members gain new perspectives and form friendships that cross borders.
‘Additionally, ESN Tilburg contributes to society by working with local organizations and supporting volunteer projects. Students are encouraged to contribute to the Tilburg community, for example, by participating in social initiatives or becoming language buddies for newcomers.
‘ESN Tilburg stands for international cooperation, cultural exchange, and a close-knit, global community within the city of Tilburg.
