Marianne Lalande wins writing competition

We have a winner. Student Liberal Arts & Sciences Marianne Lalande wins the writing competion that Univers and Academic Forum launched, with her story about the city of Tilburg.

The jury, consisting of English teacher and former campus poet Andrew Cartwright, columnist and blogger Erik-Jan Broers and Univers editor in chief Francine Bardoel, chose Lalandes story from 27 anonymous entries. They write: “The story has a dramatic unity with beautiful literary patches combined with wonderful insights in city life. […] The story provides also some insights in architecture and city-planning. The questions she raises about the city are relevant. What makes this place so great?”

As an example, they quote:

“Street art is illegal, but the mayor might as well have begged the artists to cover the streets in paint and dreams. There is nog better motivation than a ban. And so the ancient tango continues; the painter and the cop both search and call for the other, the former stepping back as soon as the latter steps forward. I take a sip from my takeaway tea and walk on.”
