Students are boring

Students have a wild lifestyle – at least everybody thinks so. But research shows that this is not the case at all. Even students themselves think that their peers are having more parties than they do. But guess what? Students are boring.

Two researchers with the Dutch Instituut voor Integratie en Sociale Weerbaarheid (Integration and Social Efficacy) questioned one thousand freshmen about what God would have prohibited. Alcohol and drug use, unsafe sex, aggression and crime. Half of the participants received questions again on two occasions later that year.

One-third of respondents were men and two-thirds female. More than one in five respondents were students’ association members. What was the outcome? Male students on average drink ten glasses of alcohol a week, female students drink six glasses. That is not too bad. Members of students’ associations, however, are upholding their reputation as party animals a bit more, with an outcome of 21 glasses of alcohol a week.

The survey also shows that drinking does not destroy student life completely. Drinking does have an impact on academic performance and alcohol use can bring students in dangerous situations – such as aggression and unsafe sex. Furthermore, during the course of student life, students tend to gradually start drinking much more because of social pressure. However, drinking also makes for more social interaction and a decrease of loneliness.
