Ageing research gets EU status

A study into population ageing, led by Tilburg University, is the first to become a recognized European research programme. This label brings in many international administrative and tax advantages, and a lot of prestige.

Halbe Zijlstra, state secretary for science, says he’s proud the Netherlands are the first country to host a European Research Infrastructure Consortium (ERIC). The study is chaired by Tilburg University institute Netspar. Austria, Belgium, the Czech Republic, Germany and the Netherlands are founding members, many other countries participate.

The Survey of Health, Ageing and Retirement in Europe aims to grasp the impact of population ageing on European societies and thus to help policy makers make decisions on health, social and economic policy. It started in 2004. [MvdW]
