‘Unsatisfied students should complain’

Students who are unsatisfied with the quality of degree courses should file a complaint with the Dutch Education Inspectorate. State secretary Halbe Zijlstra said this during the higher education legislation meeting on Monday.

It is important that students submit their complaints about the universities they attend, Zijlstra argued. If they don’t, it is difficult to interfere when institutions lie about offered courses. The government can cut the budget of universities and institutions for higher professional education if they fail to fulfill promises made to their students.

A survey by the Dutch Students’ Union LSVb earlier showed that many degree courses are offering misleading information to their prospective students. Honest information helps students to make a better choice from the start and can reduce the number of students who change their degree course or drop out prematurely. [TvN/transl. YV]
