Fixed quota for psychology, IBA and Economics

Next academic year, a maximum of 500 students can enroll in the graduate program of Psychology. The Economics program will only take in 75 freshmen and International Business Administration (IBA) 275. If more students apply, there will be a selection by lot.

The intake restriction in psychology is the result of agreements between Dutch universities through the Dutch Association of Universities VSNU. A limited enrollment for popular graduate courses is part of the Veerman agreement, which says that universities should intensify education and cut back on drop-outs and students switching majors. According to the universities this is not possible with an unlimited intake of students.

The English-language degree courses IBA and Economics also have the possibility to introduce their own selection procedure. The study programs aim to have a better balance between Dutch and international students. Chairman of the Executive Board Hein van Oorschot: “It is not until summer that we learn about the student numbers and the result of a fixed quota. Chances are that excellent foreign students go to other countries because they want certainty. Therefore we want to keep a part of the student selection in our own hand.”

The fixed quota for psychology, IBA and Economics will be discussed during the university council this week. [MW/transl. YV]
